Counting animals — English audio story and listening guide

Animals arrive in groups of different sizes. The sequence links numbers with animals. A lion then arrives, and the scene changes.

This page gives a complete short-story recording and a separate BookAud guide. The recording is not a long novel. You can return to the source text at any time.

Audio and source text

Language: English. Duration: 0:48. Recording: Darshan Soni.

The recording preserves the original story. The guide below does not replace its text.

Open the source text and pictures

Listen with a purpose

  1. Listen to the full story one time.
  2. Read the source text.
  3. Listen to the story again.
  4. Record the number for each animal group.
  5. Write one sentence about the result.

For the first pass, keep the source text closed. For the second pass, compare the words with the pictures. If a word is unclear, return to that sentence. You can stop and continue the recording with the audio controls.

Two questions

  1. How many giraffes appear?
  2. How many fish appear?
Show the answers
  1. Two giraffes appear.
  2. Nine fish appear.

Discuss the story

Use the pictures to check the numbers. The pictures support the audio, but the exercise starts with your ears.

Select one answer above. Find the scene that supports it. Explain how that scene differs from the start of the story. Use the text as evidence. If the text does not answer a question, keep that uncertainty in your discussion.
